Overheard: First Date

Via AgencySpy:

Last night one of our spies was standing in line outside the Union Square Theater on East 17th Street to see a show when he/she noticed that he/she and his/her significant other were surrounded by people on first dates. On of those people was a complete jackass, and we have some fun quotes from the evening.

"The men were mostly talking about themselves and the women were standing about two feet away from them with their arms crossed," says spy. "Which is when we picked up the fact that the short 26-year-old...man behind us also worked in advertising."

This outta be good:

"This city is full of agencies, I can name like 3 agencies in the surrounding 5 blocks."

"I'm basically in charge of advertising for ____."

"Okay, so there's basically 2 types of advertising, there's the crazy brand advertising which is like 'oh look at us, look at us' and then there's the direct marketing which is like 'this is how much this product costs'...which is way more effective."

"There was an article on media net, you wouldn’t know it because you;re not in media, and it was like all the people working in digital are young. We grew up in a digital era. The old guys didn't get it, it's the guys who are 25, 26 like me, managing more money than I've ever seen. It's a lifestyle."

"Have you ever seen Mad Men? It's about what advertising use to be like it's like being treated with all this lavish stuff, going to crazy dinners and stuff, smoking Cuban cigars and just drinking scotch all day."

"We still get treated all lavish, like my AOL rep gave me tickets to this band Phoenix. Have you heard of them? They're from France, they're so hot right now."

"It's like being treated like 5 social classes above you."
(talking about clients taking you out)

Back to our spy: "Normally, I wouldn't care, it would have been fun to just stand there and listen to that Hindenburg of a date nosedive into the ground."

Let this be a lesson to all of you: don't be that guy.

Spy: "If you're not into brands than you shouldn't have mentioned ____, you should have told her 'There's a new phone for $99 with a 2 year contract...wanna fuck?" Hahahaha.

Love it.

DTBDRHH -- Number 9

DT's Burning Daylight Rolling Happy Hour (DTBDRHH) is going to be held on Friday June 19, 2009. This is a rain or shine event. Please mark you calendars.

The drill, as usual, will be to meet at Washington's Crossing State Park in New Jersey at the parking lot by the river with bicycles ready prior to 5:00 PM EDT, because we will leave promptly at 5:00. The goal, also as usual, is to ride to Lambertville and New Hope and stop in several of the establishments for refreshments and then ride back to Washington's Crossing before it gets completely dark.

Keep in mind that we have never made it back before dark, and at least one time it wasn't clear we would even make it back by dawn.

If you don't have a bicycle, or can't ride, or simply refuse to ride, this is OK. You should come out anyway and meet up with us in New Hope and/or Lambertville; we would love to see you. Also please tell anyone and everyone you know about it. We would love to see them too.

If you don't want to be bothered, let me know and you will be removed from any additional e-mail for this year, or forever (please specify).

Details on the actual route, actual bars, the evening's fight card, mile marker location of the traditional "rolling" craps game (now in its fifth year), and other assorted ride details will be sent in the coming days. And just in case you forgot, eff CPL.

At your service,
Ska

Day 12 Stats: Tastes Great, Less Filling

There is a reason Day 12 stats are so late, the story involves broken promises, faded dreams, lost hopes and unfulfilled personal journey’s, but that is a story for another time. I will just say sorry it has taken so long….

Since writing about something that happened 3 weeks ago is far too difficult for an individual who can't remember what he had for lunch yesterday, Gman will tell the story of how day 12 could have went, if this were a beer commercial in the 80's (maybe 70's I don't really remember)

We all meet at the bar, Bobo says that Miller Light taste great, gman disagrees and says that it is less filling. I huge fight ensues, TDDoC participants and patrons of the bar choose sides, a huge riot erupts Bubba Smith and Bronco Nagurski join the fray. Eman on a stick (EOAS) jumps on the table and yells "sic semper tyrrannis" then attempts to jump on gman's back, forgetting that he has no arms, he slips and breaks his stick and limps away into the night... cole walks in grabs a beer and says "vini, vidi, I drank"... later cole is being stabbed in the back by a number of the taste great contingent and can be heard saying "et tu mosso" as he falls to the ground. The "Less filling" group threatens to secede from the NJ chapter of the TDDoC. Trent Eman threatens to march through Pennington and burn the town if he can't get a decent quesadilla. Dorian see's Donna say hello to Tamp gets the wrong idea, commits a double murder, leaves a bloody glove and could last be seen racing away in a white ford bronco with Big Lou. Goettle stands up in regal way and says what a king would say, "Can't we all just get along".

Fed up with the proceedings, Ryan Goettle then takes a shot glass and throws it threw a mirror and yells "Listen up, I don't like fighting, you people are all fighting, it makes me sick just to be in here". Cooler heads prevail, the fighting ceases. We eat lots of pizza and receive a huge bill and drag our near lifeless bodies away. Walking away Bobo punches gman in the face and says it taste great, b*tch.

Traditionally at this time everyone is invited to join the mythic TDDoMLK but stats are so late that TDDoMLK is over… We will be in contact for other events

I'm A Dick

The only memorable e-mail written while at Americom...

The IT and Finance Departments have conducted a review of Printers/Copiers to investigate the increased amount of downtime and help tickets as well as to assist with Project 361 cost containment.

During research on the Printer/Copier Project, it was noted that there is a significant price difference between color and black/white copies. Color copies are 10¢ per copy, while black and white copies are 1¢ per copy (ten times more expensive to print in color). In addition, it appears that frequent replacement of color cartridges is a contributing factor to machine breakdowns.

Concurrent initiatives are underway to address these issues:

>> A new Printer/Copier policy (attached) will be implemented effective immediately. This policy promotes the use of technology over hard copies. It encourages black and white copies when paper is necessary.

>> Network printers will be defaulted to black and white on Friday, October 13, 2006.

>> Printer/Copier expenses and downtime will continue to be tracked to see if there are improvements after implementation of the new policy.

Day 11 Stats: The Purple Moose Arrives

Stats by Kaden

Quote from Kaden to Gman: “Nice ramrodding of me into doing the stats.” Hasn’t he heard yet? Gman does not ramrod....

Day 11 Americana Diner:

Day 11 of the 12DDoC was held at the Americana Diner. Note that I do not refer to this as the "NJ Chapter" of the 12DDoC. There is only one original 12DDoC, accept no substitutes. Much like UNC in Chapel Hill is called just "UNC" and all the other UNCs are called "UNC-Asheville", "UNC-Greensboro" and "UNC-Wilmington", etc, so shall I call the 12DDoC the 12DDoC. I refuse to acknowledge a bunch of punks who can't even come up with an original idea and the turn coats who enable them.

The Americana has become a traditional Tuesday evening location due to their rip-roaring karaoke night. I arrive at 9PM to find a bar packed with 12DDoC'ers and various locals eagerly anticipating the start of karaoke. Although there is room at the bar, I have to wait about 5 minutes to get service. I remark to Ska that if I stayed home, I would have been drunk already. The beer selection at the Americana is not bad.

G comes over and blames Goettle for torpedoing Day 10 at the HOB. G and I both agree- eff Goettle. No truer words have ever been spoken!

Goettle is taking pictures of everything. He shows me a picture where, just as he was taking it, the top of G's head pops into the picture. The top of G's head looks surprisingly similar to an ass cheek. G's got top.

Scugi is talking about poker, Tamps is talking about biking, Ska is talking loud. G is wearing a white turtleneck and blazer. Looks like the same outfit that Glenn Campbell was wearing on a Christmas album my parents had.

Karaoke begins shortly after 10PM. The performers are truly horrible. One guy I dub as "Taylor Hicks with black hair". Two guys sing More Than Words. First rule of karaoke- do not sing a slow song. I see a dweebie looking guy (a real square cat looking like 1974) feverishly pouring over the book of songs and he shortly goes up and starts to sing Fight For Your Right. And the crowd goes wild! As luck has it, I am standing next to Ska at this point. We start belting out the words. Apparently I can sing a lot louder than Ska. He looks at me with a combination of fear, pity and envy. Why is it that all these so-called talent shows subjectively select people on their "ability"? Why not just put a volume meter, instead of a microphone, on the stage, and award the title to the loudest singer?

Su shows me some sort of 12DDoC Ten Year Anniversary chalice, but I did not pick up the story that went with it (ie, is it given to the 12DDoC MVP to carry around all year like the Stanley Cup?).

I suffer through several more songs. Goettle tries to convince me to sing "Darling Nikki" with him but I pass (that's more of an Eman thing). When the most ancient of geezers goes up to sing "September Morn", I decide to head home. There is no chance I want to be on the road later when that guy is driving home.

I get home to find Xtine still working on finishing up some Christmas presents. Day 12 attendance is deemed as being "questionable".

Chalice spoken about above is the formerly mythical “Coveted Purple Moose Award”. This story begins at TDDoC 2004 when Gman explains to Michele D that she has won not only the Rookie of the Year Award but also the coveted Purple Moose Award, this honor is bestowed upon the most valuable drinker during the TDDoC. At the time MD was amazed, shocked and honored to receive such an acknowledgment. She subsequently asked about the award ceremony and asked how much space she would need to clear out of awards cabinet to hold this Purple Moose. Gman replied, “that’s easy, there is NO ceremony and there is NO real award”. The Purple Moose Award lies in the fantasy of drinking men and women, it is real only to them. Feeling that this injustice should never be laid on another, MD went into her workshop and toiled for years creating the perfect award. After years of designs and redesigns, she finally displayed the Purple Moose Award at Americana on Day 11 of 2008. And that is how the Coveted Purple Moose went from a myth to reality… either that or MD had an extra glass so she created a commemorative 10 yr anniversary glass… personally I like the former story
