Day 2 Stats: Slaying Pins
Day 3 location: Tigers Tale 1290 Route 206 North, Montgomery, NJ
Pro tip: Highly suggest NOT taking Route 206 to get there during rush hour. Take Great Road to 518, or Rt 1 to Ridge Road to 518.
This long-standing establishment in the heart of NJ’s Pod's Exclusion Zone (NJPEZ) has been popular for decades with lesbian soccer moms, drunken pilots, and unemployed choir singers. The decor features poltergeists, mandolins, a stuck-up puppy who will ignore you, and of course, their signature drink the Violent Chicken (make sure you have them "bruise your banana").
Day 2 Stats
Slocums Bowl-o-Rama.
The name itself evokes images of a time gone by, when the hip thing to do was to go down to the Bowl-o-Rama to slay some pins and drink a malted with the girl or guy you were going steady with. And time, it has passed Slocums by. It appears that everything is either original or hasn’t been replaced since the early 80s, and the walls are so thick that cellphones don’t work and no one can hear you scream.
There are appealing things to Slocums: the cotton candy smelling and immaculate women’s rooms, the high male to female ratio (calculated at 12:1 at one point in the evening), and that while the lone bartender may take 20 minutes to get you a drink when there are only 5 people in the bar - they just might forget to ring it up and charge you for it. And of course - the cash drawer that is wide open all night. Seriously, I’m shocked that someone hasn’t hit Slocum’s and its easy cash and blackberry brandy stash.
I walk in and see Scugi sitting on a bar stool, furiously trying to get a signal on his phone to email his WHYYYYY. I eventually get a drink, and then the Eastman crew rolls in. There is much discussion of the stuffed sandwiches on the menu, and which one is the “healthier” one to get. Another fun fact about Slocums: the bartender refuses to touch food. He will go and fetch a waitress to deal with such things. I personally think he’s a vampire and is afraid of the garlic that may be in the stuffed sandwiches (which may explain why no one has ever ventured near the open register) - but really, if there’s going to be a vampire in a bar, it needs to be Eric Northman.
Tamp arrives, and takes the end seat at the bar, just as Gman and Eman’s food arrives and they go sit at a real plastic table to enjoy their abundance of sandwiches. Discussion at the bar turns to Frankenstorm survival tales. Scugi tries to convince us that he single handedly lifted 3 downed telephone poles to exit his street and then chopped them all up for firewood to use in his woodstove. This of course leads to a detailed discussion of The Walking Dead and how to survive the zombie apocalypse.
Yo, Rose, and Ska arrive, and talk turns to Football - how awful this weekend was, and how everyone’s fantasy teams are tanked. We thought we spotted CPL, but after some investigation realized we had mistaken the back of his head for a bowling ball. Possibly the result of drinking too much bottom shelve liquor. Pods, Celeste, and David arrive and we’ve reached the maximum number of TDDOCers for the evening.
David, Pods, and Yo notice that one of the two working tvs (the other four are purely decorative) is showing WWE female wrestling. Their eyes got wider as they leaned closer to the “soft glow of electric sex”# similar to my old man and the leg lamp, mouths opening and panting as a little drool escaped, taking delight in viewing entertainment they wouldn’t dare to at home. They then start extolling the athletic skill of the female wrestlers, and how authentic the fights are, protesting loudly that there is any choreography prior to the match. Suuuuuure fellas (I was more entertained by the men in plaid pants).
Sophia arrives, in time for one drink before our group decides to pack it in, as Celeste and I were greatly disappointed that while the women’s bathroom is still the cleanest we’ll likely find during the 12 days, it did not smell like cotton candy anymore.

Day 1 Stats: Let's Get Serious
Day 2 location: Slocum’s Bowl-O-Drome, 1675 Pennignton Road Ewing, NJ.
This delightful establishment in the heart of NJ’s cauliflower country has been popular for years with unmatriculated college students, the NJ Weedman, and habitual hand washers. It features head-shaped bowling balls, armpit shots, and of course, their world-famous “bottom shelve” liquor (check your receipt). Don’t miss the new overstuffed sandwiches at Sloc’s Grill, crammed chock full of French fries, onion rings, chicken fingers, brownies, and unused pig parts.
Day 1 Stats
I read the local reviews of the Day 1 location. “Rho Ristorante Discoteca, Trenton, NJ, www.rhowaterfront.com. This new cutting-edge nightspot in the harbor section of downtown Trenton has quickly become famous amongst the glam establishment of New York and Philadelphia, and is often frequented by hairless pop culture celebrities, prison escapees, and deceased astronauts. It features nude bowling, radioactive whiskey shots, and electronic pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey.” Well, that sounds exciting I thought to myself. What well-written prose….that author has an amazing way with words I thought further. I eagerly gathered up the family and hightailed it to this astonishingly fine ristorante, in eager anticipation of nude bowling with escaped convicts. To my astonishment, when I got there, I found none of this. All I found was a bunch of old people sitting at a bar eating mini-pizzas. No deceased astronauts, only a few aging current and former aerospace workers. (Sigh).
Bobo wins the award for first WHHHYYYY call of the season. Eman gets one at about 4:45. WHHHYYY are you drinking alone? I’ll tell you why…..it’s 4:45. Now I have no problem with drinking at 4:45. Just give a brother a heads up and a heroic rescue can be arranged.
Apparently the highbrow dress code only tripped up a few attendees. Pods was hatted and forced to remove his nazi pirate biker helmet. Ska was forced to spray paint his tan work boots black. Mertz was forced to run to the Men’s Wearhouse and get a suit because the bouncer didn’t like his long baggy shorts and Oakland Raider ankle tattoos. Eman on a stick made the trip, but was told at the door that guests with a spine made out of a paint mixing stick were not welcome. Eman on a stick’s inaugural 2012 appearance will have to wait.
Hor’s doeouvers were served by a tall woman in a see-through white top. Thank the lord that see-through white tops are allowed per the dress code. Wings were very tasty, other stuff not bad. Yo reported that 2 for 1 pizzas were decent, a huge upgrade from the completely awful meatball parm that had been served to him in a previous visit.
It was discovered that a sweet 16 party was going on inside the discoteca. Trent Eman was encouraged to take off his shirt, run into the party, and hope for the best, but apparently that was some sort of violation of the dress code. The next-best strategy for Trent was a vigorous round of Presidents vs. Aliens, in the hopes that his deep knowledge of U.S. president trivia would impress the ladies. Why not? This approach always worked extremely well for the Gman while clubbing in the 80’s.
Despite the pediatrician’s ongoing warnings to their parents, Julian and Andrew kicked off their answer to the NFL’s play 60 program (designed to get kids in motion) with their own program entitled “eat 60 finger program”, based upon sitting and eating chicken fingers for 60 minutes each day. It may not be quite as healthy, but we’re all getting older and we need some TDDOC bench strength developed. Thanks for grooming your boys, Su.
The ratio of TDDOC attendees to non-attendees at the bar was 35-2. The NJ chapter had one corner, the PA chapter had another corner, and the up and coming Burlington Coat Factory chapter (Dana and Norine) had another corner. At times it was like a middle school dance, with each corner staring at each other with a mix of terror and disinterest. Drastic measures were required….what could bring these groups together? Ahh, the shot of the night! The shot of the night was Fireball cinnamon whiskey. Tasty, refreshing, mellow, and likely the cause of many pains on the throne the next morning. It’s also very effective at tricking the breathalyzer into thinking you’ve overdosed only on cinnamon buns, so keep a bottle handy in your glove compartment just in case.
Other than our three groups, the other bar attendees were limited to a few stragglers and an angry unhappy looking older couple. There was lots of arm crossing and stern looks, and it was only a matter of time before the phrase “hey kids, get off my damn lawn” was uttered. Eman encouraged the creation of a contest where each of the three groups try to wow them into their group, but Crazsian shot that down immediately with “I don’t want them”.
Several belated awards from the 2011, 2010, and 1926 seasons were given out by the PA chapter executive commissioner Crazsian. The 2011 and 2010 awards were for Crossover champion, given to the individual most pathetic that they actually have nothing better to do than to cross over from the NJ chapter to the PA chapter. Eman and Russ got the 2011 and 2010 awards, respectively. Crazsian insisted that there was absolutely no implied meaning behind the fact that Russ’ award was much larger and thicker than Eman’s, but there was a twinkle in Russ’ eye.
Goettle made a surprise appearance and FINALLY admitted that his move to Virginia was all just a hoax and he still lived in Hamilton, with the intent to simply “start a new life” away from “those people” having failed miserably.
Billionaire Pat Worth and Russ vehemently agreed that Saturday Night Live is horrible and hasn’t been funny in 20 or 30 years. They then went outside to yell at some kids to “get off the damn lawn”.
The bikers (Tamps, Katherine, Laura C, I’m missing others, CPL who has a bike) left after a while to “hang out with their real friends”. Oh wait, it was just to hang out with each other. OK, it was Laura C’s birthday and the two for one pizzas just weren’t doing it for her. Yes, but did they have Fireball cinnamon whiskey shots where you went? Happy Birthday, Laura!
I’m going to try to recycle a tradition from Year 1 of the TDDOC, the construction of the 2012 Twelve Days song. Each day the stats writer shall suggest 4 possible lines, and the next day’s stat writer (in addition to suggesting 4 lines for their day) gets to pick the winner from the previous day (or OK just make one up). Here goes:

2012 TDDoC Begins! Ready to Go, RHO is Day 1
AS ALWAYS, IF YOU HAVE NO INTEREST AND/OR WANT TO BE REMOVED FROM DISTRIBUTION (OR WANT TO PROVIDE A DIFFERENT EMAIL ADDRESS), LET THE CHIMP KNOW.
Ahhhhh, darkness at 4:30, freezing cold air, the sweet melodies of frequent noseblows, and inescapable Christmas music in every nook and cranny of the face of the earth....it must mean....it's time for.... THE 16th ANNUAL (EXCEPT 1998) FESTIVAL OF.....THE TWELVE DRINKING DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (TDDoC)!!! This year's theme is the U.S. Fiscal Cliff. Why stockpile your money at home in savings, when it will just be demolished by taxes or rendered worthless via recession? What could be more American than coming to a bar and spending your money on American alcoholic liquids and putting hops growers, potato growers, and grape stompers across the US back to work? Caution….some of those alcoholic liquids have been produced by non-American companies in France. Please discourage your co-revelers from drinking non-American.
START DATE: FRIDAY, DEC 7 LOCATION: Rho Ristorante Discoteca, Trenton, NJ, www.rhowaterfront.com.
This new cutting-edge nightspot in the harbor section of downtown Trenton has quickly become famous amongst the glam establishment of New York and Philadelphia, and is often frequented by hairless pop culture celebrities, prison escapees, and deceased astronauts. It features nude bowling, radioactive whiskey shots, and electronic pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey. Sure, it $ucks, but get used to it, because all of these places do.
Legendary traditional (in other words, really lame) Day 1 spot Charlie Brown's is yet still closed due to bankruptcy due to all of the raisin bread stolen from the salad bar over the years by Crack Pipe Larry. Rejoice that the Day 1 location has been chosen and advertised this early. This will be the last time during this event that you will be this happy.
Now for the details. For those that are new to the TDDoC, I've included the following Guidelines. For those that are familiar with the TDDoC format, you may still want to re-acquaint yourself. It's not as easy as riding a bike. It's almost as easy as drinking, but not quite.
Guidelines
1. For the purpose of the Festival, working days in which you could drink AFTER WORK are considered "Drinking Days". (I know that the term "Drinking Days" causes some controversy every year as it is easily and often argued that every day is a "Drinking Day"). Traditionally the Festival begins on the date that allows 12 "Drinking Days" to occur prior to Christmas Day - This year it's the 7th of December. Unlike other chapters throughout the country (especially those in the greater San Jose area and west of the Delaware River in general), there will be no special exceptions due to plant closings, postal holidays, moon/earth alignments or other such nonsense. The twelfth day of the event will as always occur on Dec. 24. Why? Because that helps to make this whole thing as inconvenient as possible.
2. Attendance is scored by showing up and drinking with your friends, colleagues, soon-to-be-friends, other peoples' neighbors, and assorted annoying bores. Any action to discourage someone from showing up simply because they have bad breath, poor eating manners, or are a pompous a$$ is severely frowned upon. This is good fodder for the stats (see guideline # 7). However, unwillingness to imbibe can of course be held as a strike against any otherwise worthy candidate. Agreeing to participate in an "a$$-off" is generally considered as a reasonable substitute for drinking, unless you are a man. Tradition has it that there is a one-drink minimum to be awarded a Point. Anyone on travel during The 12 Days & gathering in the spirit of The 12 Days will, of course, be considered participants if they 1) are actually drinking and 2) submit Stats. Please note that the official TDDOC definition of "considered" is "not considered". Phoning in alone does not enable point awardance but is highly encouraged to aid the home team in stats preparation. Drinking by yourself does not count, and drinking with some casual loser work friend if that loser is not involved in the larger effort does not count either. If you want a point for drinking with that casual loser work friend, you will need to drag them out to multiple mainstream TDDOC events in order for your miserable time with them to count. Whoever has the highest Tally of Points on Day Twelve will be awarded a coveted TDDoC trophy, and, as always, be obligated to abuse those that fell short in their quest to be the champion for their lameness. Never mind that said trophy has NEVER been awarded. It sounds good on paper. Note that in lieu of said trophy, the ceremonial "knocking of the sconce" off the wall at the Day 12 location may be substituted. Far and away the most significant value of the point system is to incur repeated heated discussions, fisticuffs, and "airing of the grievances". Please keep this in mind and argue about points that you "should have had" as often as possible. Penalty points: If a TDDOC member shall drive within 100 yards of the night's location on the way home without stopping, that member shall forfeit all points and be subject to a NUTKX (see section 8).
3. Any adult-beverages consumed outside these events (weekends, from the bottom-drawer at work, at breakfast.. .) is regarded as Practice for The 12 Days and will not be scored. However, as in any hard-core sporting event, practice is highly encouraged.
4. Events are to be held in a different pathetic central NJ (or perhaps other states, as long as they are east of the Delaware river) establishment each of The 12 Days. Suggestions for events at further-away locations are, as always, highly encouraged, and yet, as always, highly unlikely. Any crossings of the Delaware river must be by rowboat while standing to be fully sanctioned by the TDDOC.
5. Invitees are by no means limited to those addressed in this initial distribution. This is an open invitation. Any stiff that you can drag out is more than welcome. Participants should also encourage breakout chapters in other sections of the country. Once again, the San Jose CA chapter will also be in full working order, and rumor has it that another chapter may have been chartered west of the Delaware. Unfortunately, due to complications from Sarbanes-Oxley, the OJ Simpson legal trial, and public campaign for Congo the dog, the Dulles VA chapter, despite having received a $20 billion subsidy from the US government, still cannot square up on previous bar bills and is defunct. There are allegedly Facebook pages for other chapters throughout the country, but be forewarned! These are really embedded viruses that when clicked upon will cause you to be pummeled with email nonstop from a collection of raving lunatics. Wait, that may be this email distribution list. Either way, do NOT click on these sites.
6.Family events, work parties, watching Who’s the Boss marathons, having to "wash your hair" that night, removal of bodily organs (aka "the kidney card"), spending time with loved ones, being forced to move to Virginia, etc. are to be considered POOR excuses for missing TDDoC events. These may be important during other parts of the year but during the TDDoC festivities, please try to focus on what is really important, i.e. "Where are we drinking tonight?".
7. Which brings us to the daily Stats. a) Stats are to be published the following day, with enough time to prepare for that day's event (i.e. before/during lunch), by an elected or forced stat-writer. This responsibility traditionally rotates between participants. Amendments and/or additions to the original published Stats are not only welcome but, in fact, encouraged (Different points of view can be awfully amusing). HOWEVER, rebuttals should stick to the general topic of TDDoC and the stats. Using the distribution list for sharing of personal jokes, "cool" youtube videos, and/or naked pictures of one's own butt are highly discouraged and the author will be placed on distribution for every internet junk e-mail list possible. b)The Stats have generally been a free-form record - Including, but not limited to, the night's activities (should at least cover the basics, where when who etc), discussion topics (politics, sports, fashion, WHATEVER), liquids consumed (cooking/dipping oils and food condiment consumption are especially welcome here) and any patriotic songs sung. Generally, any photographic records of karaoke versions of "Darling Nikki" are highly discouraged. c)Stats include an announcement/proposal as to where the next night's gathering is to be. d)Stats include the running Point Tally.(stat writer's personal choice on whether points from the legendary Glenn Burtnick concert at Altamont in '69 should count or not) e)Stats are an ideal forum to introduce Suggested Topics for that night's discussion. Throw out a topic or two you (the scribe) would like to see tabled during the night's activities. This of course may (and likely will) be completely ignored. Of course, if the word "scribe" is used at any point, you may risk being beat senseless with an empty beer bottle or an "Eman on a stick". f)Stats of course need not be true!! Embellishment and downright manufacture of the details is highly encouraged! g) Note: Use of the word "scribe" itself is highly discouraged in East Coast chapters. Please see (e) again. H) One more thing: For the love of g0d, please do something stupid, loud, obnoxious or disgusting to help out your local stat writer with material.
8. WHYYY?? call: It is standard for the first person who shows at that night's event to vent their frustration from having to sit at the bar by themselves like a huge loser by calling another participant on their cell phone and yelling "WHY????" into the phone, which is of course short for "WHY am I drinking alone?". Per custom, it is encouraged to then hang up the phone prior to allowing the recipient of the phone call to respond in any manner. No special bonuses are awarded for this other than the personal satisfaction of taking out your societal anger on an unsuspecting other party. Anyone caught making a bogus "WHYYY??" call (NOT the first one at the bar, NOT alone at the bar, or NOT even at the bar) may be subjected to a "NUTKX", which is a Windows software module which will provide the user with a swift kick to the privates upon next logon to work computer as punishment for violation of important social norms. NUTKX may also be provided manually by the recipient of the bogus WHYYY?? call or by the bartender. WHYYY???? text messages, facebook/twitter updates, and/or instant messages are similarly not acceptable and will quickly be faced with a stern poke in the chest from the tallest person in attendance.
9. Contests, competitions, shenanigans: Contests such as no-repeat beer quest (not repeating a brand/style of beer for the entire 12 days), no-repeat tequila shots, drinking your drink out of another's shoe, duels at 20 paces, and of course footraces are highly encouraged. No special points will be awarded for most "shushings" (i.e. being told by an old lady that you're too loud and need to quiet down).
10. Alleged celebrity sightings: Always encouraged, always highly unlikely. It is believed that there has been only a single alleged celebrity sighting in the history of the TDDoC: the alleged sighting of Lilleth from Cheers in the Main Street Bistro circa 1999. Please try for more, and if encountered do your best to engage them in either (1) drinking heavily or (2) mean-spirited fisticuffs.
11. Hard liquor of the day: The first person at the bar (or first person that cares to do so) is encouraged to name a hard liquor of the day, and all are encouraged to imbibe in said liquor at some point during the evening, be it in a mixed drink, shot, straight up, or pouring it over one's own head. Shouts of "ALRIGHT, WHERE'S THE HARD LIQUOR?" (copyright The TEH Foundation) should of course accompany said activity.
12. Pre-season: According to Tamps, there is no pre-season and no points for any efforts shall be awarded….according to Tamps. I'm just sayin'.
13. Privacy Notice: Any hopes of privacy are limited at best, and everyone is responsible for themselves (copyright the DT Foundation).
So, without further adieu, clear out your calendar and load up your office desk drawer with hangover remedies!!

Things could be a whole lot better
Jack: Hi, Lloyd. A little slow tonight, isn't it? (Jack emanates a belly laugh)
Lloyd: Yes it is, Mr. Torrance. What'll it be?
Jack: I'm awfully glad you asked me that, Lloyd. Because I just happen to have two twenties and two tens right here in my wallet. I was afraid they were gonna be there until next April. So here's what. You slip me a bottle of bourbon, a little glass, and some ice. You can do that, can't you Lloyd? You're not too busy, are ya?
Lloyd: No sir, I'm not busy at all.
Jack: Good man. You set 'em up and I'll knock 'em back, Lloyd, one by one. White man's burden, Lloyd, white man's burden. (Jack opens his wallet and finds it empty) Say Lloyd, it seems I'm temporarily light. How's my credit in this joint, anyway?
Lloyd: Your credit's fine, Mr. Torrance.
Jack: That's swell. I like ya, Lloyd. I always liked ya. You were always the best of 'em. Best god-damn bartender from Timbuktu to Portland, Maine - or Portland, Oregon for that matter.
Lloyd: Thank you for saying so.
Jack: Here's to five miserable months on the wagon and all the irreparable harm that it's caused me.
Lloyd: How are things going, Mr. Torrance?
Jack: Things could be better, Lloyd. Things could be a whole lot better.
Lloyd: I hope it's nothing serious.
Jack: No. (He taps the bar for a second drink) Nothing serious. Just a little problem with the, uh, ol' sperm bank upstairs. Nothing I can't handle, though Lloyd, thanks.
Lloyd: Women. Can't live with 'em. Can't live without 'em.
Jack: Words of wisdom, Lloyd. Words of wisdom. I never laid a hand on him, god-damn it. I didn't. I wouldn't touch one hair on his god-damned little head. I love the little son-of-a-bitch. I'd do anything for him. Any f--kin' thing for him. That bitch! As long as I live, she'll never let me forget what happened. I did hurt him once, OK? But it was an accident, completely unintentional. Could have happened to anybody. And it was three god-damned years ago. The little f--ker had thrown all my papers all over the floor. All I tried to do was pull him up - a momentary loss of muscular coordination. A few extra foot-pounds of energy per second, per second.
